Here to echo that pea gravel is absolutely no go. In my area, we order 3/4" minus crushed, placed about 6" deep. A full dump truck load delivered to my house was $200. It will compact solid if plenty of fines are included. You could go as small as 1/4" minus if you wanted a super stable pad.
